Sherborne in Dorset sounds like the perfect place to live and is incredibly fit for the future.

The Sunday Times newspaper declared in March 2024 that Sherborne is the best place to live in the South West.

Sherborne High Street

Sunday Times judges said: “A busy high street and high-class education helped to make this community-centred, cultured town our best address in the southwest.”

Judges visited locations up and down the country and assessed factors from schools to transport, broadband speeds to culture, as well as access to green spaces and the health of the high street.

Now, on top of that, Sherborne has also won the UK’s 2024 Sustainability category in the Visa and British Retail Consortium’s “Let’s Celebrate Town Awards”. Click on the following link to see the announcement in the local news, from the Dorset Association of Parish and Town Councils.

Sherborne Town Council has achieved a fantastic amount in all the areas that need to be addressed which are all part of their Green Sherborne Forward Plan.

  • Renewable energy has been introduced in local sports facilities and is being rolled out across the town using air-source heat pumps, LED lights etc.
  • Local Schools have engaged in all sorts of eco-activities, and the town youth council has been established to help coordinate activities. 12 schools participated in a “Conference of Parties (COP 28)” held alongside a Sustainable Careers Fair
  • Various local organisations have been established to support the green plan including The Climate Café, the Repair Café and Insulate Sherborne
  • EV Chargers have been set up in the town
  • Businesses are active in recycling and developing good practice in climate change.

All of which shows why they were selected and can act as a showcase for what can be done for all towns across the UK.

Councillors have been certified as Carbon Literate, and Town Clerk Steve Shield came along to Save Our Shropshire’s December 2023 course sessions and got his certificate.

Steve said: “Thank you for the great training sessions provided.  Your expertise and knowledge of climate matters have been invaluable in helping me to understand and apply what I have learned.  The enthusiasm and positive attitudes of everyone on the course made the experience both enjoyable and engaging.”
